As a therapist, I believe that creating a coherent narrative of our lives allows us to understand the course of life in context. Instead of focusing on isolated incidents, we can see the totality of our experience, and develop clarity surrounding the natural consequences of being a vulnerable human living in our world.
Why do we feel the way we do? Is it due to an identifiable situation? Is it an endemic "wounded child" emotional response to the situation? Or is it something else?
Mindfulness practice is useful to us because it creates a grounded connection to our bodies and our emotions. This lets us become familiar with these sensations, and we are ultimately able to better self-regulate. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is also a useful therapeutic modality because it incorporates the processing of emotions alongside behavioral changes in order to effectively attack our problems.
